Inspiring a Love of Reading Across CELT

World book Day at Cornwall Education Learning Trust.

On 5 March, our schools came alive with stories and imagination as learners and staff celebrated World Book Day as part of the National Year of Reading. The day served as a powerful reminder of the importance of reading – not just as a fundamental skill, but as a gateway to opportunity and lifelong learning.

Teachers and support staff joined in the celebrations, reinforcing a shared culture where reading is valued and enjoyed by all.

Across the Trust, schools embraced the theme in unique and engaging ways, giving learners dedicated time to immerse themselves in books of their choice. Our schools ensured that every child had access to books that reflected their interests, backgrounds, and reading levels. Whether it was through graphic novels, audiobooks, or traditional texts, the message was clear: reading is for everyone.

Simon Pollard, Director of Primary Education, emphasised that World Book Day is not just a one-off event, but part of a wider commitment to nurturing a love of reading throughout the year. He said "As part of the National Year of Reading, CELT continues to prioritise literacy development, recognising its crucial role in academic success and personal growth."

What is clear is that World Book Day is much more than a day to dress up; it provides an opportunity to encourage a shared passion for reading.

Parents and carers are being encouraged to get involved in their child's reading, with CELT sharing resources and ideas to support reading at home. From bedtime stories to author visits, the partnership between school and home plays a vital role in building confident, enthusiastic readers.

As the National Year of Reading continues, Cornwall Education Learning Trust remains committed to ensuring that every child discovers the joy of reading for pleasure and carries that love of reading with them for life.
