    National Year of Reading 2026

Cornwall Education Learning Trust's mission is for every single one of our 9,000 learners to see themselves as a reader and read for pleasure. That’s not a hope - it’s our commitment as part of the Department for Education’s National Year of Reading 2026.

    • Reader Identity: Every child sees themselves as a reader
    • Reading for Pleasure: 100% report reading for pleasure
    • Family Engagement: 10 minutes daily reading together in 100% of families
    • Improved Outcomes: +5% reading attainment improvement across the trust
    • Community Building: Vibrant reading communities in every CELT school
    • Empathy Development: Use reading to build empathy and understanding
    • Inclusive Celebration: Remove financial barriers to all reading events

    Why reading matters

Everyone knows reading expands worlds, sharpens minds and fuels creativity. But fewer of us are making time for it. It’s time for us to Go All In.

Reading isn’t one subject among many - it’s the gateway to everything. A child who doesn’t read, struggles to access the curriculum, struggles with GCSEs, struggles in the workplace. But a child who reads for pleasure is 13 times more likely to read above the expected level, and shows improved outcomes in maths, vocabulary, spelling, empathy, and wellbeing.

Right now, only 1 in 3 children aged 8-18 enjoy reading in their free time. The lowest level in 20 years. We’re going to change that.

    Getting started

We have created this dedicated space to help support learners, families and staff during the National Year of Reading. You can find information, resources, advice and events to help encourage reading for pleasure.
