Reading for Pleasure in Action
A learner from Newquay Junior Academy has earned a place in comic book history after being featured in the iconic British comic The Beano.
Dusty was successfully selected as a “Beano Boss” – a special opportunity that gives young readers the chance to help shape content in one of the UK’s most beloved comics. After applying for the role, Dusty impressed both the Beano editorial panel and fellow readers, securing a spot in the creative process and ultimately being immortalised within the publication.
As part of the experience, Dusty was invited to contribute ideas and take part in elements of the editorial process, offering input into the kind of stories and humour that make The Beano so popular with generations of readers. The role gave a unique behind-the-scenes insight into how a professional comic is created, from concept to final print.
The achievement is not only a proud moment for Dusty, but also a fantastic example of the power of reading for pleasure. By engaging with books and comics in a fun and creative way, pupils can develop confidence, imagination and a lifelong love of storytelling.

Staff at Newquay Junior Academy have praised Dusty’s enthusiasm and creativity, highlighting how opportunities like this can inspire children to see reading and writing as exciting, real-world activities rather than just classroom tasks.
Being featured in The Beano places Dusty among a long line of characters and contributors linked to the comic, which has entertained readers since 1938 and remains a staple of British popular culture.
For Dusty, the experience has been both exciting and rewarding, an opportunity to see his ideas come to life and to be part of something enjoyed by readers across the country. It also serves as inspiration for other young people, showing that creativity and a love of reading can open the door to unique and memorable opportunities.
